Arthritis & Your Dog

Have you noticed your dog seeming sluggish, tired or sore? Does your dog seem to be reluctant to walk, run or jump? It may be that your dog is suffering from canine arthritis. Approximately 20 percent of all dogs in the U.S. suffer from canine arthritis. This disease develops slowly over time and can cause your dog to have pain and trouble doing simple tasks such as walking or climbing stairs.

There are several risk factors to be aware of when it comes to canine arthritis. It is important to consider whether your dog is overweight, over the age of 5, a large breed or has joint injuries. Once these risks are considered, take into consideration the signs of canine arthritis and assess whether or not your pet does indeed suffer from canine arthritis. The most common signs of arthritis are: sluggishness, soreness, reluctance to walking or climbing stairs and aggressive or withdrawn behavior.

The pain your dog may experience results from their joint cartilage wearing away and causing their bones to rub together. Luckily, this pain can be managed once your pet has been diagnosed by a veterinarian. Rockbrook Animal Clinic offers treatments for this disease, including medications that can provide control of the pain and inflammation affecting your dog's quality of life. Please call us if you feel that your dog may have canine arthritis and would be happy to set up an appointment to evaluate your dog. We can be reached at (402) 397-2424.
